Supporting Boys, Shaping Futures

Brian Harris, Guiding with Heart as a Mentor and Advocate

Brian’s passion for youth mentorship shines through his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mayhew, and as a Rotary Exchange host parent. Having lost his father at

age 12, Brian grew up without a male mentor, “I wish I had a program like Mayhew growing up”. His connection to Mayhew began when his “Little Brother,” Michael, was selected to join the program. Over the past two years, Brian has proudly watched Michael grow into a confident young leader. A memorable highlight was inviting Mayhew to present at the Meredith Rotary Club, and watching Michael take charge of the Q&A session, speaking confidently about his Mayhew experience. “It’s amazing to see the leadership these boys develop,” says Brian.

What strikes Brian most about Mayhew is its year-round support. Boys are guided from ages 10 to 18, with opportunities like summer camp, mentoring visits, and jobs on the Island. On a visit to the Island this summer, Brian recalls asking a kitchen worker, a boy he knew, to say hello, only to hear, “I can’t—I’m at work!” This sense of responsibility and commitment really impressed him.

When asked about his favorite Mayhew memories so far, Brian recalls a lively dinner on the island and the Mayhew Olympics synchronized swimming competition this summer - an evening that created lasting moments of joy. “I encourage everyone to visit Mayhew in the summer,” says Brian. He notes a visit to the Island offers an unforgettable experience—complete with a boat ride, and a glimpse of the daily routine, and a meal shared with the boys. “Yes, the boys do finish their lunch before dessert and clear the table!” Visitors witness the fun, the structure, and the character development firsthand.

Brian says he supports Mayhew because of its impact—ensuring boys attend at no cost and are part of the program all year long. He strongly believes that all contributions, big or small, can make a meaningful difference in the program. While watching the synchronized swimming event, Brian realized Mayhew needed a portable sound system for Island events like this. Brian spoke with the staff and made it a reality. For Brian, it goes to show that all contributions, big or small, can make a meaningful difference in the program.

Now retired from a career in technology consulting, Brian enjoys skiing, hiking, and boating in New Hampshire. As a father of [PS3] two grown sons, his passion for mentoring continues to shape his life, making him a proud supporter of Mayhew’s mission to help boys become responsible young men.
