The Referral Process Boys referred to Mayhew are ten or eleven years old and have experienced
either some social difficulties or lack of opportunities. Each year we choose from over 200 candidates after extensive screening and interviewing. We accept referrals from principals, teachers, counselors, social
workers, Boys and Girls Club directors, youth athletic program staff, probation officers, and other youth officials from many areas throughout New Hampshire from mid-February to mid-March each year. The selection process
is based on our attempt in determining which boys will benefit the most from the program. We weigh many objective factors including family income, family make-up, candidate age, and many subjective factors like apparent need
and ability to benefit from the program. We then interview the best prospects, beginning in April, and make our final selections for the summer by May.
Invariably, the boys see Mayhew as a chance that may seem
too good to be true. We try hard to undersell the program and emphasize at each step the serious commitment the boy and family must make. The boys come to Mayhew of their own will and are granted the chance to determine
for themselves if this is something they can commit to. Once they commit themselves to participate, to work hard, and to abide by a high standard, this is really the beginning of Mayhew for them. Their departure from
shore and journey to the Island only makes it tangible for them. They have really already begun.
All boys participate in the program tuition-free thanks to our many friends and supporters. |
