The Mayhew Link-Up Program

In response to a variety of surveys in the early 90's (and our perception that our graduates deserve a more active, official connection with Mayhew), we founded, in 1994, the Mayhew Link-Up program.  Link-Up has proven to be both an effective way to stay in touch with Mayhew's graduates and a way to create an image of success and community involvement, which the current Mayhew boys can aspire to achieve.

As Links, Mayhew boys continue to participate in the year-round, follow-up visits with full time staff members.  During the summer, while the 10-12 year-old program boys are on the Island, Mayhew Links are taking on more and more responsibility out in the community.  They come to the basehouse for a busy week that is mainly focused on planning, preparing, and executing a two to three day canoeing or hiking trip.  Whether they're paddling down the Saco River or trekking through the White Mountains, Links are working with the staff to ensure the success of each expedition.  Their efforts pay off year after year, and the Link-Up week has become an important part of the summer for many boys.

Kitchen Staff: Links giving back...

Another great opportunity is available to boys who have been through both their two years on the Island and completed one year of Link-Up.  These "second year Links" can apply to work in the Island kitchen.  Now behind the counter, the kitchen staff serve not just as cooks and dishwashers, but also as role models and examples of the importance of hard work and commitment.  In exchange for all their efforts, kitchen staff earn real paychecks, which are matched dollar for dollar in a personal education fund.
