As the boys return home after the summer, Mayhew begins its community outreach phase. From September to May each year, Mayhew's five community workers visit regularly the boys in their respective caseloads. These visits with the boys serve to reinforce the lessons of the summer and build on Mayhew's relationship with each boy. Essentially, the staff are positive role models while advocating for the boys at home and at school. They provide a sympathetic and often tension-defusing ear to family conflicts, they provide extensive written reports on each boy's summer experience to parents, school officials, and other involved agencies, but most importantly, they continue to serve as friends and role models for the boys of the program. |
