Michelle Bowie

Wow, the years have really gone by fast – it is hard to believe that I have been with Mayhew since 1982!  But I know that it is so because there was a wonderful celebration of my 25 years on the Island on August 25, 2007.

I
moved around quite a bit during my growing-up years, mostly all over Colorado.  Though I was born in a little town called Salida, I never really lived there but I've lived in Denver, Boulder, Leadville, Climax, and Grand Junction just to name a few.  These were all pretty small towns, other than Denver!  When I was 15 we moved to New York City of all places, actually in Jamaica in the borough of Queens.  From there we moved on to Ridgefield CT.  I also lived in Columbus OH for a short time just before my marriage in 1970.  MIchelle and Skip on a HarleyThat is also when my husband, Skip, and I moved to Bristol and we've lived here ever since!

Skip worked to help build the Island infirmary (Lincoln House) in 1975, then stayed on as director of maintenance for the summer.  The years passed – I worked at the Bristol Bank, now TD BankNorth and when the opportunity arose to come to Mayhew I eagerly looked forward to the chance to work with the great program that I had always thought so much of.

My daughter, Lori, lives nearby in Bristol, with her two children, Samantha, and Douglas.  My son, Ed, has been a Marine since 1992 so he has not been near home as much as we would like, though he has recently been stationed at the Westover Reserve Training Center in Chicopee MA.  It's great that he and his wife, Kari, and our grandchildren—Riley, Jade, and Keegan—will finally live close enough to visit a lot!

Now that our family is grown, we enjoy our three dogs, Bo, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and Bo and Cheyene playing tug-of-warour two beagles, Cheyenne and Spot.  Bo definitely loves visiting the Island too, and swimming in the lake!  Chey, as we call her, is just a big baby whose only job in life is to be held and loved.  Bo on the other hand, like most of her breed, is quite strong-willed, and I've enjoyed participating in weekly dog obedience classes to help her "become a better member of her community."

My other pastimes are golf in the summer (still very mediocre after many years, I'm afraid!) and snowmobiling in the winter.
